28th November is apparently known as Black Friday in the United States, when everyone finally escapes the company of their Thanksgiving house-guests that they can no longer stand.  They then move to more pressure and then face overwhelming, overwrought department store crowds to buy gifts for those house-guests that they have just escaped from!  Bizarre or what!  And especailly after some one this week was killed in the crush!  Are we all mad?

Truly, joy or joys and the mad season is upon us or well nearly here anyway.  But fear not, the Geekend has a cure for Black Friday,  either as a gift you can order to avoid the mall, or as a defensive measure you can employ against fellow shoppers it’s the Chain Mail t-shirt.   It offers +4 defense against unruly cousins and pushy bargain hunters. It does come with a few warnings as you can imagine, chain mail does not stretch, so buy the size you are - no give in that one! Work your hands through to the end of the sleeves and then begin to stand-up, if you can. Get your head through the neck hole and let the chain mail slide down your body. If you have long hair, make sure to tie up your hair before you wear the chain mail. Otherwise it could get tangled in your hair. You might feel a bit claustrophobic when first wearing the chain mail but don’t worry you won’t get stuck. Oh and you have to wear a shirt or some other garment underneath the chain mail. The edges of the rings where they are joined together are a bit rough and can scratch you.

We are always looking for interesting information about fashion and especially jeans and we found on  Forbes a interesting article about “Best denim for work”.  Today it really dos depend on what type of environment and business you work in as some businesses would frown upon their employees wearing jeans.  However, other companies embrace this fact because after jeans are comfortable to wear and a popular fashion piece for young and old and men and women.

It’s hard enough trying to figure out how to adhere to your company’s “business casual” rules without throwing denim into the mix.  But that’s exactly what’s happening in offices from coast to coast, across the pond.

“If I could wear my jeans to work every day I would, but with our policies some jeans are acceptable only on certain days,” says a manager at McKinsey and Company, who asked not to be named. “Prior to three-day weekends we receive an announcement saying we can wear jeans [on that Friday], which usually means it’s fair game for any type of denim. People for the most part use their discretion and wear something that’s work-appropriate.”

A study of 200 men and another of 500 women conducted last year by Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor magazine found that just over 65% of women surveyed prefer wearing denim jeans to work and wore them in the office at least four days a week. Seventy-four percent of men surveyed prefer to wear jeans at work, rather than other types of pants. This yen for denim has prompted employers to write explicit denim clauses into their human resource handbooks, according to Mary R. Crane, founder of Mary Crane Associates, a business consulting company based in Denver. These clarify where and when denim is permissible (or not).

We are always looking for interesting stories about mens fashion here,  and we spotted one the other day in the Globe and Mail about pockets on mens trousers and jackets. The article makes a very good point by saying that slimmer styles of trouser mean we have less room in our pockets for the ever-growing number of things we need to keep in them such as wallets, cell phones and keyrings.

The fact is that most men carry a wallet in their pockets stuffed with all manner of credit cards, handfuls of coins, receipts for the last two years and an ever-growing number of business cards. Even where a wallet is kept for the sole purpose of storing cash, our mobile phones are getting bigger again as we want to update Facebook, GPS and use Twitter from our phones, look at Google Maps or check our email on the go and to take photographs.

The thing is, and it is something we have always known, guys, when we shove all this junk into our pockets, it looks pretty bad. Having a huge lump against your leg or your bum cheek does not flatter anyone. There is a reason that women carry handbags and this is it.

Sadly, we have no idea how to remedy it either, save the Globe and Mail suggestion of inside pockets. If anybody has got any suggestions, we are listening.  Leave your comments here.

Esquire has a rather entertaining list of fashion tips for men who would like to dress casually yet still look fashionable and appealing. While much of the list has merit, we’re not 100% on a few of their suggestions. A nice-looking pair of jeans is acceptable casual dress for just about any casual or smart casual occasion unless you are told no jeans.

Although we’d tell you to leave the really worn-out, ripped jeans for lounging around on a Sunday, doing a bit of shopping or perhaps creating an edgy look for a night out, you will find very few places that you would wear a pair of chinos to which you could not comfortably wear a nicely-tailored pair of jeans.
